>>>The Clan of Whizzers of late have come up with the following list of rock band names:>>>

You forgot Maroon 5.

RE:">Evanescence is a good band that is marketable.. and we should be happy about the local band getting national coverage, though (dare I say?), some

but does anyone recall them playing in town before the big record/Green Hornet movie came out? I'm not sure they were ever a "local band" in a traditional sense. More of a vehicle for marketable music/product (nothing inherently wrong with that). I support local music quite a bit and don't remember seeing them here or in the region. Please correct me if I'm in error.">>>>

Evanescence started out playing shows like most new bands in LR do==at home, and then at Vino's. (in the Rolling Stone article/interview Amy Lee mentions Vino's as where they got their start). They opened shows for Living Sacrifice and a few other Christian bands before going over into the secular market leading to broad acceptance and then denouncing the "Christian" label.

One reason many folks don't remember them here is that they moved together as a band to Memphis in order to hone their craft with an eye on being marketable and having the skills to do it---dance & acting classes, voice coach, really rehearsing as a band, hooking up with someone who believed in them who pushed them successfully (it didn't come easy) to the labels.

They got the big break with the songs on the movie "Daredevil" and its trailers which helped propel the album. You may be able to go overboard about praising the music, but in no way can you slight the fact that these guys are huge ( I believe the album is 5 times platinum at this point, not quite sure) and garner tremendous attention nationwide and in Europe and Asia (the British and Japanese markets particularly) . Documentary film makers from England were recently in town to film background for a video doc. for British release.

So, good or bad in your eyes, this band has "made it". It's up to the local bands to take advantage of the attention on LR brought about by their success. Little Rock has TREMENDOUS local bands like American Princes, Poe Boy Society, Parachute Woman, Big Silver, Sara Thomas, Mulehead, the Kicks, Ho-hum and countless others doing all original music. Everything from Thrash metal & Christian hardcore to punkabilly & radio-friendly pop, not covers or 3 bar blues.

But as usual, most of the public will only pay to see someone they have already heard on the radio. You're missing out if you don't take a chance on some of the locals you've never heard at shows like Vino's "Fresh Blood" nights monthly (new bands), Juanitas AR Musicians Showcase, independent shows at the Riverfront Belvedere, Downtown Records shows & anywhere
live bands play. It's usually only $5 and some of the best shows I've ever seen were attended by 10 people and the sound guy and bartenders.
